When you think of the MBA degree, you probably think of Harvard. Many consider Harvard Business School to be the best in the world. Forbes ranked Harvard #1 in its 2011 survey of business schools, and it has placed in the top 10 of most other such lists, including BusinessWeek, U.S. News and World Report , and The Wall Street Journal, since rankings began about 25 years ago. One reason that this school is ranked so highly is because of the opportunities available to those holding a Harvard MBA. For the Class of 2011, Harvard reported a median salary for graduates of $120,000 and a median signing bonus of $20,000 - not bad, when you consider that the average age of students when they graduate is under 30 years old. With such attractive employment opportunities, and because it's so frequently ranked number one, everyone wants a chance to go to Harvard. HBS gets more applications to its full-time MBA program than any other business school in the world - a recent peak of 9,524 applications, in fact, for the Class of 2012. But there are only about 900 seats in each entering class. Harvard admits a few more students than actually enroll each year, since a handful of people decide not to attend even after being accepted. Still, this results in an acceptance rate of only 11%. With ten candidates competing for each seat, those are pretty long odds. The good news is that there is no one "type" of applicant that Harvard accepts. The Admissions Board is welcoming of applicants from literally any type of professional background or personal circumstance. Harvard is a very global program, with about a third of its students coming from outside the U.S. Anyone interested is invited to tour the Cambridge, Massachusetts campus and sit in on a class during the school year. (Visiting the school is one of the very best ways to learn whether it's a good fit for you -- after all, applying to bschools is like dating, you need to know what's available before you pick one for life!) Harvard offers a transformative educational experience that can either facilitate a radical career change, or accelerate an existing career along its current trajectory. Harvard graduates are in high-responsibility roles at companies large and small around the world, in fields from consulting to finance to social venture to the private sector. It's one of the best-regarded MBA programs in the world, with a very competitive admissions process. If you're ready to go for your MBA and you're up for a significant challenge, you can't pass up the opportunity to try for Harvard!
